Lithium battery can be abused by electrical devices like chargers that are programmed with wrong settings. One way to ensure that doesn't happen is to have a CAN BMS and power control systems from Victron. Victron, the largest global company in this space have an excellent system for ensuring batteries are not over-charged.

But not everyone has a Victron system. There are other popular systems from Redarc, Enerdrive, Projecta and BMPro that require parameters to be programmed correctly. For these systems and of course for Victron, the new Safiery Solid State Lithium is a huge safety advantage.

What is a Solid State Lithium Battery?

The traditional liquid lithium battery is called a 'rocking chair battery' by the scientific community because of its charging and discharging principle. The two ends of the rocking chair are the positive and negative poles of the battery, and the middle is the liquid electrolyte. Lithium electrons move back and forth across the two ends of the rocking chair and complete the charge / discharge of the battery during the process.

There are many safety hazards in this process because of the liquid electrolyte.  Overcharging the battery creates heat, causing the electrolyte to swell, decompose, spontaneously ignite or even explode.

The charging and discharging principle of a solid-state battery is the same as that of a liquid battery. The only difference is that its electrolyte is solid, which has the following advantages over liquid electrolytes:

1) Higher Safety:

The liquid electrolyte in traditional batteries creates safety hazards if over charging or electrical abuse. The result is thermal runaway and fire. Solid-state batteries have higher safety without this electroyte mass.

2) Higher Cycle Life:

Because solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, the cycle life is doubled. A minimum of 10,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge is expected.

3) High energy density:

As solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, they do not need to use lithium-intercalated graphite anodes, but directly use metal lithium as the anode, which can reduce the amount of anode materials and increase the energy density of the entire battery.

4) Smaller size:

The separator and electrolyte in the traditional liquid lithium battery account for nearly 25% of the entire battery mass. With the solid electrolyte, the distance between the positive and negative electrodes can be shortened to ten micrometers. The result is smaller battery dimensions and better quality control.

5) Lower temperature Range:

Solid State Lithium is less affected by freezing temperatures because of the solid layers.

6) High Discharge rate:

Solid State Batteries can discharge up to 10C. However, the BMS current rating limits discharge rates

Why Stackable Solid State Lithium Battery and How is it Done?

Lithium batteries need to fit the required space. Unless it fits, the technology is not an option. We have completed so many jobs with conventional lithium batteries and often need to stack them. However the stacking form factor was huge and difficult to utilise in a 4WD Canopy.

Often, the best space in a 4WD canopy is behind the fridge. But space there is a premium.

This Safiery Stackable Solid State Lithium should fit perfectly. We have tested the form factor with many 4WD Canopy builders and its perfect.

All you need is a 420mm L x 152mm wide foot print.

Three Solid State Lithium Batteries for 600Ah @ 12V: 752mm high.

And Design Patent in USA, UK, Europe and China.

When stacking the Solid State Lithium batteries together, we designed a slick system. Connecting the batteries together are a pair of purposeful copper flexible straps. These sit in grooves on the edge of the battery. They are flexible so can peel away after lugging down the bottom battery and then placing the top one.

Up to 4 Solid State Lithium batteries can be placed in the stack. You will see in the photo above of a real battery, the metal cage that take the vertical weight.

The battery case is a custom design by Safiery and made from ABS with Safiery's rubberized finish.

Unless your Lithium Battery has these features it is NOT marine compliant

Marine requirements call for a Lithium Battery system that shows on a display:

  • Min and Max Cell Voltage
  • Min/Max cell temp
  • No of Battery Modules
  • No Blocking charge or discharge

Unless the battery provides this, even in a fishing boat, an insurer may decline a claim if its electrical in any way.
