36V TROLLING MOTOR TIME TO GO 125Ah LITHIUM BATTERIES.

This article explains how to connect 36V trolling motor with Time to Go on Lithium Batteries.  

36V LITHIUM BATTERY SET MADE FROM 3 x 12V LITHIUM BATTERIES

There are two way to set up a Lithium Battery for a 36V (or 24V) trolling motor:

  1. Purchase a dedicated 36V battery with a specialised 36V charger.
  2. Purchase  3 x 12V Lithium batteries wired in series and charge with a 3 x 12V isolated circuit charger.

This article is about the second set up. The benefits of this setup are:

  • Multiple battery management units give better control than one over 36V
  • Greater battery capacity with 125Ahr at 36V
  • Better charging efficiency with each 12V battery perfectly charged
  • Small 12V currents for sounder and other electronics can be taken from one of the 12V Batteries.

CHARGING 36V LITHIUM BATTERY SET

The charger has 3 channels of charging that can be permanenetly wired to the battery set in series.

  • Each charging channel is 12V and independently isolated from the other charging circuits.
  • The charger profile is perfectly matched to the Safiery Lithium batteries (literature from charger manufacturer does not list Lithium because of wide range of Lithium profiles… but the default profile works perfectly for Safiery Lithium batteries.)
  • The Charger can remained connected while the 36V battery operates when trolling.
  • Plug the charger in after returning to base with 240V available.

MOTOR RUNNING TIME ON LITHIUM

Field results in Australia with an 80ftLb Torque 24V trolling motor in typical applications is:

  • With 2 x 120Ahr AGM/Gel/Calcium the batteries hit the 50% threshod in 2 working days
  • With 2 x 125Ahr Lithium batteries expect double the amount of motor time: 4 working days

ADD SIMARINE MONITORING FOR TIME TO GO ON BATTERIES

Simarines, PICO gorilla glass display will show:

  • State of Charge of Trolling Motor lithium battery set
  • “Time to Go” for Lithium battery set to reach a user defined threshold (say 20% SOC)
  • Starter battery voltage and “Time to Go”
  • One additional temperature sensor.
