Victron Energy selects Safiery’s Digital Switching as a technology partner.

Victron is the market leader globally in electrical power conversion headquartered in Netherlands.

  •  Victron have pioneered a graphic user interface that allows open collaboration as well as cloud based remote management and support.

  • This ability to assist customers and even see the last 6 months of history changes the way support is done for adventure travellers whether on land or sea.

  • Its a honour for Safiery to be invited to collaborate our STAR range of digital switching so that for the first time, the Victron touch display can switch devices and dim lights.

  • Safiery’s STAR controller range includes IP67 controllers up to 150A 12 channel with 6 x 30A circuits and on device manual backup.

  • Safiery’s controllers are all advanced fuseless and open circuit in the event of a short circuit in less than 80 millionths of a second.

  • In parallel to the Victron screen are 8 and 12 button CAN connected keypads IP65 with interchangeable icons.

  • There are 4 bluetooth wireless 4 button switches also to choose from and any one output can be addressed by up to 6 switches.

  • The user can configure a Master or Submaster switch on the Victron display and all the programming is done with a smartphone. No laptop necessary.

  • The STAR controller connects to Victron’s Cerbo or Ekrano using encyrpted WiFi. No additional cabling is required. Together with the wireless switch we estimate typical installation times are halved for installers.

    This new technology simplifies communication with no hub or “middleware” between the STAR controllers and the Victron system. This dramatically reduces system cost and configuration time.

    There are 10 products in Safiery’s STAR range. All designed and built in Queensland… even better on the Gold Coast. The STAR range was a finalist at Metstrade’s prestigious DAME (Design and Manufacturing Excellence) Award in Amsterday last November. 

Synchronous Customer Experience with AI – Victron Meets MATTER.

  •  Firstly, what is MATTER?

    Matter is an open-source, royalty-free connectivity standard developed to unify smart devices . It ensures they can communicate and interact seamlessly regardless of the manufacturer. Devices are tested by an independent testing laboratory who only give approval with strict compliance. Matter is backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung who require blockchain encryption on each and every controller. The ultimate in privacy and security.

  • Using MATTER devices lowers installed cost because of extensive use of wireless. For example a sound system on a boat can be a matter compliant system that synchronises with multimedia screens and controlled from any smart display. When a light is turned off using STAR controller in main cabin and its late at night, the sound system is turned off everywhere, the night light in the ensuite is turn on and dimmed to a low level, plus inverters can be turned off, plus… This automation is done on the users smartphone. Google even has AI for it now!

  • AC outlets and devices can be turned on/off within the same display – wirelessly.

  • Bosch are incorporating MATTER in every appliance. So they can simply be turned off remotely from your smartphone when not using the boat.

  • You see the status of all devices on your smartphone at home.

  • In late 2025 camera imaging will be included in MATTER with blockchain encryption. You can see the maintenance technician entering your boat from home, but the same camera won’t share images outside of your secure network.

  • It’s Energy Management where there are big benefits.

  • Demand control of “non essential” loads can be made based on battery SOC or even better, based on solar forecast and battery SoC. For electric propulsion, estimating the battery energy to retain for overnight living can be automatically calculated.

  • That’s the power of AI in smartphones, they do the heavy lifting. There is no laptop to program… or need of a technician to re-program. Another significant cost saving.

  • Controlling lights, dimming them and even changing colour is all done on smart display or smart phone in the same native app as the multi-media and energy devices.

  • One homogenous app. It will no longer be “Hey Google or Hey Siri”. Smart displays will recognise you and say “Hey Marilyn, energy and water levels are good but the temperature is dropping tonight so the heater and hot water will be turned on earlier if you agree. Do you?”

  • There are around 2,000 compliant devices and all can be integrated with automation from Safiery’s STAR conrollers which can be activated by a wireless switch.

  • However, Safiery’s STAR system can be deployed and operated without MATTER which is only added if the user wishes it. How Good’s That!

How is this possible to replace the 12V 120A Alternator with this power plant?

  • Safiery’s new Permanent Magnet Generator controlled by Scotty AI V3 and Solid State Lithium technology provides the perfect power and energy for sailing boats without a genset.
  • This is a 30Hp Yanmar 3JH engine. There is no need for a genset or excessive battery capacities.
  • This is a case of compact 48V power and lithium solution that fits hand in glove.
  • Charging the 12V starter battery AND powering all the 12V loads is done by Scotty AI DC DC functionality. In this boat up to 3kW can be provided at 12V.

Summary

  • The Safiery Bidirectional Generator produces up to 240A at 48V at 90% Efficiency.
  • Compare this to traditional alternators which produce from 100A to 160A at 70% efficiency.
  • A BGM is at it’s core a Permanent Magnet Generator which has rotor windings replaced by permanent magnets. Because there is no rotor excitation, rotor excitation losses – about 30% of total conventional generator losses – are eliminated. This results in high power density and small size with the highest efficiency at all speeds.
  • A traditional alternator uses diodes and either an internal regulator to convert the AC power to DC or an external regulator like a Wakespeed.
  • The BMG has an inverter fitted to the rear that converts AC to DC and to control the speed and torque of the motor. The dynamic response of this inverter controller far exceeds an alternator.
  • The generator is 90% efficient. Compare that to 70% of an alternator.
  • The rear mounted compact inverter is 94% efficient. This out performs the common diodes in some alternators or the wakespeed remote regulator..
  • The Safiery BMG also uses HES Technology (Hybrid Excitation Synchronous). This combines permanent magnet (PM) excitation and electromagnetic excitation at the Stator (not rotor).
  • This hybrid excitation mechanism overcomes the limitations of low output power at low RPM.
    The Safiery BMG outputs more than 2000W at idle compared to a few hundred watts with a traditional 48V alternator and remote regulator.

What role does Scotty AI play with the Bidirectional Motor Generator?

  • Big power needs to be handled securely and at high speed. Scotty AI V3 becomes an integral part of the power system with the BMG providing this functionality:
  • It communicates with CAN BMS lithium batteries and continuously calculates the charging parameters integrating these with the BMG control.
  • If there is no CAN BMS on the 48V lithium, then “no problem”. Scotty AI assesses non-CAN BMS lithium batteries and continuously calculates the charging parameters for the BMG to control.
  • Scotty AI controls the BMG power at different speeds so when a vehicle or boat accelerates from idle, the torque is relaxed to have less load on the engine.
  • Scotty AI controls the BMG based on temperature rise of the inverter, motor speed and torque to give smooth power across the range of engine RPM.
  • Scotty AI has an onboard DC DC to give maximum power when called for by high power 12V or 24V devices like winches.
  • Using the DC DC functionality, independent to the BMG, charges the same or an alternate 24V, 36V or 48V battery bank. The charging parameters can be completely different.
  • Using DC DC functionality, independent to the BMG charges the starter battery so only the BMG is present on the engine with NO 12V or 24V alternator.
  • Scotty AI V3 connects to the Victron VE.CAN bus with no negative impact to Victron control on the same bus.
  • Scotty AI V3 and the BMG is visible on Victron’s new GUI display showing the charging power in the “alternator” box.
  • SCOTTY AI V3 has a connected App that is used for tuning with a patented auto-tuning feature as well as setting up charging parameters for the BMG and DC DC independently.

Drop in and Start Using

Jupiter is pre-wired with all the inputs and outputs on the case.

The Photo shows a Jupiter D series I.

On the front panel are the power inputs and outputs with 5inch touch screen .

The GPO’s are ready to go as well as the 240V power in.

A certificate of compliance is issued so there is no need for an authorised electrcian at installation. We have taken care of that inside the case.

What's new in Series II

Series II has 2 major improvements.

The digital switching is upgraded to STAR-Light V2 with 12 channels of 10A switchable outputs .

Integration of the new Solid State Lithium batteries gives a screen view of the cell min/max and number of batteries on line and number of batteries charging/ discharging. Solid State Lithium is the safest lithium available. The Batteries are not included and are an optional extra.

The Victron Display shows the details of the batteries as they are compliant and compatible with Victron. You cant see this display with non-compliant lithium batteries.

Run the caravan from the 4WD as if you are on a powered site.

The length of time that you can operate for depends on the power load of the caravan and length of time. In our experience, here are typical times:
With 4 x Solid State in 4WD (850ah at 12V equiv) but generally 48V:

  • Aircon – 8 hours
  • All electric Kitchen – for 3-4 days

This battery will disrupt the lithium business because of it’s incredible safety and long cycle life of 10,000cycles.

It may well be that insurer’s will insist on this technology in the future as it significantly lessens their risk.

The traditional liquid lithium battery is called a ‘rocking chair battery’ by the scientific community because of its charging and discharging principle. The two ends of the rocking chair are the positive and negative poles of the battery, and the middle is the liquid electrolyte. Lithium electrons move back and forth across the two ends of the rocking chair and complete the charge and discharge of the battery during the process. In this process, there are many safety hazards: if there is overcharging, the battery is prone to heat, causing the electrolyte to swell, decompose, spontaneously ignite or even explode. The charging and discharging principle of a solid-state battery is the same as that of a liquid battery. The only difference is that its electrolyte is solid, which has many advantages over liquid electrolytes:

1) Higher Safety: The liquid electrolyte in traditional batteries creates safety hazards if over charging or electrical abuse. The result is thermal runaway and fire. Solid-state batteries have higher safety without this electroyte mass.

2) Higher Cycle Life: Because solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, the cycle life is doubled. A minimum of 10,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge is expected.

3) High energy density: As solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, they do not need to use lithium-intercalated graphite anodes, but directly use metal lithium as the anode, which can reduce the amount of anode materials and increase the energy density of the entire battery.

4) Smaller size: The separator and electrolyte in the traditional liquid lithium battery account for nearly 25% of the entire battery mass. With the solid electrolyte, the distance between the positive and negative electrodes can be shortened to ten micrometers. The result is smaller battery dimensions and better quality control.

5) Lower temperature Range: Solid State Lithium is less affected by freezing temperatures because of the solid layers.

6) High Discharge rate:Solid State Batteries can discharge up to 10C. However, the BMS current rating limits discharge rates to 1C Continuous and 2C for 10 secs.

STAR-Light Digital Switching

STAR-Light has 12 Channels to switch.

See the suggested list in the image on the right.

The Dual colour channels can be controlled by a single button.

For example the Work Light Driver and Passenger can be controlled with a single button: “Work Lights”.
Press for Passenger side, Double Press for Drivers side, Press again for both to come on.

This way, 12 outputs can be controlled by a single 8 button keypad.

Included in Jupiter Pack is the rubberised 8 button keypad. It has such a nice traditional button press but your fingers can be grimy or dripping inoil ad they clean up easily.

As an option to add are the choice of Engravable CAN or Battery operated long range bluetooth for the drivers side Or our new interchangeable icon keypad (optional extra)

STAR Range of Powerful SWITCHING -yet so SIMPLE to Use

Customers wanted a digital switching system that is so easy to install. Everyone wanted to operate only with switches, others touch screens and then others to use a phone app. Safiery have all these forms of control. The simplicity is that all these communication paths go directly to the STAR controller. This reduces the cost to make STAR Range around half the cost per output to the published retail price of Redarc equialent.
